Eczema flare-ups are annoying, painful and can be very uncomfortable to deal with. But on your face? It can be all of that as well as making you feel very self-conscious too. While there is no cure for facial eczema, there are face eczema treatments available which can help. Here are ten tips which can help you get some of the best face eczema relief.
- Talk to a dermatologist before you do anything else! They are trained professionals and a wealth of information regarding your skin. It is possible that they may prescribe medication for your face eczema flare-ups.
- Try to figure out what causes a face eczema flare-up? Is your eczema related to any allergen? Have you had allergy testing? While it is unknown if allergies trigger eczema for certain, medical professionals believe there may be a correlation between the two. According to the Eczema Association of Australia “Some foods and alcohol: dairy and wheat products, citrus fruits, eggs, nuts, seafood, chemical food additives, preservatives and colourings” are listed as potential triggers.
- Try using a cold compress. Many people find relief from flare-ups by using cold compresses on the affected area. Cool water, cool washcloths, and cold compresses all may offer some relief from the burning and itching associated with eczema on the face.
- Try not to stress! Believe it or not, stress can be a potential reason for an eczema flare. While completely eliminating stress in your life is probably unrealistic, learning to manage it in healthy ways may help reduce your eczema flare-ups.
- Take care when washing your face. After washing your face gently pat the skin dry, especially on the affected areas. Don’t rub, this may cause further irritation to your skin. Make sure to also use a moisturiser for sensitive skin after you wash your face to help lock the moisture in.
- Keep fingernails short to discourage itching of eczema. Itching can make it harder for the skin to heal, which is important in skin care management.
- Avoid materials that are rough on your skin. For example, don’t use a woolen scarf as it may irritate your neck and face. Use soft, preferably 100% cotton materials that are gentle on your skin.
- Reduce dust mites on fabrics that have regular contact with your face. Washing your pillows, sheets and blankets are a good way to stay on top of this.
- Try to regulate body temperature. Getting too hot or too cold may also trigger a flare-up of eczema. It is a good idea to pay attention to your body when you feel changes in temperature and adjust accordingly.
- Avoid using cosmetics and make-up. It may be a good idea to avoid cosmetics during a facial flare-up of eczema. Many cosmetics are perfumed or may contain irritants. While your inclination may be to cover up with foundation, you may be doing more harm than good.
Hopefully, these ten tips will help you make it through your next facial eczema flare-up with a little more ease!
