Eczema is a mysterious condition. It can come and go, seemingly with a mind of its own. No one knows what really causes it for sure. It seems to have triggers, such as certain skin products or fabrics, but these aren’t the same for everyone or necessarily the same in the same person as time goes on. Childhood eczema tends to appear before the age of two and may persist up to the preteen years. However, childhood eczema tends to clear spontaneously by the time the youngster is a teenager. Adult sufferers aren’t so lucky and more often than not, will have a waxing and waning of their symptoms on a more or less permanent basis.
It’s not contagious, but people with eczema can often feel self-conscious when people stare at their skin. It often feels even worse than it looks. It itches and can become extremely uncomfortable. The skin can break, leaving painful open cuts. It’s no wonder sufferers will do just about anything to seek relief, including the use of steroid creams with possible side effects. Babies and young children with eczema are more prone to infections from scratching. They don’t understand that scratching makes the condition worse. Keeping the skin moisturised will help to reduce this problem.
Steroid creams are not always effective. Some are far more powerful than others, but all can cause side effects:
- Skin may thin, thicken, or darken
- May cause stretch marks to appear
- May cause tiny red pimples in treated areas
- Cataracts and glaucoma are rare, but possible
All steroids can cause suppression of the adrenal glands. This can cause fatigue, changes in skin colour, weakness and nausea. The adrenal glands secrete important hormones related to the regulation of sodium and potassium levels. In extreme cases, lack of adrenal function can cause a medical emergency. Severe systemic side effects from steroid use are more likely when they are taken orally and not from topical use, but systemic problems from topical use are not impossible.
A better alternative for eczema relief is the use of natural products. There are natural skin creams for eczema that are effective and do not contain steroids. Natural skin creams such as Hope’s Relief Premium Eczema Cream have these benefits:
- Are all-natural. No steroids
- Can be used long-term, even on infants and toddlers
- Won’t cause skin changes that steroids can, so there’s no “rebound” or worsening of symptoms when stopped
- Can be used to help treat a “rebound” episode and prevent one in the future
- Are free of systemic steroid side effects
