Eczema is a skin condition that causes dry, itchy, sensitive skin. Eczema affects about one out of every five babies. There is no cure for eczema, although the condition can be managed. As a parent, you wonder, how can I soothe my baby’s eczema? Here are some suggestions.
- Moisturise your baby’s skin regularly. According to the Australasian Society of Clinical Immunology and Allergy, moisturising is “the most important single thing anyone with eczema can do.” Keep your baby’s skin moist even if the eczema…?
- Avoid bathing your baby with soap. Soap dries the skin and can make eczema worse. Use a soap-free cleansing bar or body wash. Use lukewarm water, as very hot water can dry out the skin.
- Consider giving your baby a bleach bath. Bathing in diluted bleach helps to remove staph bacteria, which can trigger eczema. Use one teaspoon of bleach per one gallon of water. Always talk to your paediatrician before you give your baby a bleach bath.
- Cut your baby’s fingernails short to lessen scratching.
- Dress your baby in loose clothing. Tight clothing can cause itching and rashes. Cotton clothing is best. Rough fabrics such as wool can further irritate the skin.
- Saliva can irritate the skin. Put petroleum jelly on your baby’s cheeks before eating or naptime. This will create a barrier between the saliva and the skin.
- Keep your baby cool. Excessive heat can make the itching worse.
- Eczema might be a symptom of a food allergy in your baby. Talk to your paediatrician about testing for allergies.
- Consult your paediatrician if your baby’s eczema does not improve. He or she can recommend the best baby eczema treatment for you.
